GREENISH LIGHT STREAKS REPORTED IN NIGHT TIME SKIES

by Staff Nature Writers, The Daily Republican Newspaper

MOUNT PALOMAR - California sky watchers from Los Angeles to San Francisco reported seeing a strange greenish-yellow light filling the northeastern night time sky Thursday night. Astronomers contacted by the Republican were unable to identify the source of the phenomena.

In Bakersfield, Calif., the Kern County Sheriff's Office told reporters 'People said it was a big flash of light that was greenish-looking. We got about 30 calls on it, but no one seems to know what it's all about.'

'It could have been a meteor or a reentering satellite,' Frank O'Donnell, spokesman for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena told the news service.

The Los Angeles Times reported on Friday that Thomas Aina, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman, said he received several reports of the flash from as far as San Francisco. The light was also reportedly visible as far east as Albuquerque.
